History

The Beginning

Constructed in 1907, The Train Workshop was designed to serve Denmark’s railway system as a key site for the inspection and maintenance of steam locomotives. Its shed-style roof provided consistent daylight throughout the day, while the elevated central section accommodated a large overhead crane used to lift entire engines during overhauls.

A 10-metre sliding bridge enabled the transfer of locomotives between specialised zones within the building. Narrow-gauge tracks connected various workshop areas, allowing for parts to be disassembled, distributed, and reassembled with precision. Many of these features remain intact today, offering a visible legacy of early industrial systems thinking—one grounded in coordination, division of expertise, and long-term functionality.

Lokomotivværkstedet Today

Following its renovation in 2009, The Train Workshop has become a sought-after venue for major exhibitions, conferences, and cultural events in Copenhagen. The main hall covers over 9,000 square metres, with adjacent spaces such as the Boiler Room and Acid Room adding further layout options. The venue can accommodate up to 3,500 participants for large-scale formats, while its modular structure allows for seamless scaling to suit smaller sessions and showcases.

Natural light fills the hall through its timber-framed glass roof and floor-to-ceiling windows, creating a sense of openness that supports dialogue and discovery. An adjacent 6,500 m² green space further extends the experience, offering opportunities for informal networking, outdoor sessions, and relaxed moments between programmes.

For Bridge2Food Europe 2026, this venue supports a vision that brings industry, academia, and innovators together in a shared space built on legacy, utility, and reinvention principles.
