Dr Petra Hanga is an Associate Professor in Biochemical Engineering at University College London and the co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer at Quest Meat Ltd. She is an internationally recognised leader in Cultivated Meat research working at the intersection of engineering, life sciences and commercial interfaces. Her research covers a range of topics from serum-free media development to edible scaffolds and innovative bioprocessing for addressing the current pressing challenges of cultivated meat, as well as interdisciplinary research looking at risk mapping from technical, societal, political, legal and regulatory perspectives. Petra is associated with several Alternative Proteins-focused Centres including the Cellular Agriculture Manufacturing Hub (CARMA) and The Bezos Centre for Sustainable Proteins. To date, Petra has delivered >35 invited talks, published 3 book chapters, and 5 research papers on her work in cultivated meat research and has organised 4 conferences with a focus on cultivated meat. Additionally, Petra is the Chair of ESACT-UK (European Society for Cell Culture Technology, UK branch) and a member of BESIG (Biochemical Engineering Special Interest Group) within the IChemE (Institution of Chemical Engineers) where she advocates for cultivated meat and alternative proteins. She is the winner of the inaugural ESACT-UK Chris Hewitt Rising Star Award (2021) and an Executive Editor (Regenerative Medicine) for Biotechnology Letters journal.
