- New Cell Culture Media Ingredients: from Plant Extracts, to Enable Cultivated Meat at Cost and Scale - Dr. Natalie Rubio, Tufts University
Serum-free cell culture media is the leading cost driver of cultivated meat production, mostly due to recombinant proteins (e.g., albumin, transferrin, insulin, growth factors). Animals eat plants, and we think animal cells should eat plants, too. We work to develop novel ingredients, derived from natural plant extracts, to serve as ultra low-cost alternatives to recombinant proteins in SFM. Our first ingredient (cAlbumin) is a drop-in replacement for recombinant albumin; a functional protein isolate extracted from canola meal. This presentation will cover the approach, development, and scale-up of cAlbumin and additional plant-derived media ingredients.
